I hosted our RaceAway Hospitality group alongside my co-host Ashley for the 2025 Talladega YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. We spent Sunday, October 19, 2025, watching a wild afternoon of drafting, drama, and the ever-present threat of the Big One from our front-and-center seats in the Upper Birmingham Tower. With the pack shuffling constantly and engines absolutely roaring, our Talladega Superspeedway NASCAR packages put everyone right in the thick of it, and nobody left disappointed.
Settling into Our Talladega Home Base in Birmingham
I’m Jamie, the Wisconsin half of this host duo, and Ashley is our North Carolina sunshine. We set up shop at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Birmingham – Hoover, a full-service, all-suite hotel just south of downtown Birmingham and close to the Riverchase Galleria. Guests really appreciated having roomy two-room suites, cooked-to-order breakfast in the morning, and a comfortable lobby bar and lounge where they could unwind after long days at the track.
Ashley and I were on site from Friday evening through Monday morning. I handled a lot of the schedules and checklists, while she greeted guests in the atrium, answered questions, and let everyone know, “If y’all need anything, just holler – we’ve got you.” Together, we made sure everyone knew the plan for both race days and felt taken care of from start to finish.
About a quarter of our travelers were returning RaceAway guests, which gave the weekend a reunion feel right away. Brian L. flew down from Canada with his best buddies for yet another Talladega getaway, his twelfth RaceAway trip since 2012. He practically has his own Talladega playbook at this point and was quick to share tips with first-timers on scanners, coolers, and where to keep an eye out for the Big One. We also welcomed long-time friends Glenn W., Dennis B., and Neil R., who make it a tradition to attend a race together every year. Watching them pick up right where they left off, debating playoff storylines and comparing which tracks they have checked off, was a highlight for both Ashley and me.
On Saturday, some guests chose the optional charter transportation and tickets for the United Rentals 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race. Our noon departure got that group to Talladega in time for pre-race pageantry and the 3:00 p.m. green flag, while others opted to relax at the hotel or explore Birmingham at their own pace.
Race Day Travel and Track Experience
Sunday morning came early. Ashley and I met guests in the lobby before our 8:00 a.m. motorcoach departure for Talladega. The track sits roughly 55 miles from Birmingham, and with race-day traffic the ride can stretch to around an hour and a half, so having our own private charter made everything much easier. Guests could sip coffee, chat, and get their race gear sorted instead of wrestling with directions or parking.
When we rolled into Talladega, guests naturally split into two groups: those heading straight to the Talladega Garage Experience and those making a beeline to our grandstand seats.
The Talladega Garage Experience opened at 10:00 a.m., giving fans time to get close to the cars, watch the crews work, and soak up pre-race energy before driver intros. Ashley walked a few guests over, pointing things out and saying, “This is where you really see how hard these teams hustle.”
Up in the Upper Birmingham Tower, our reserved seats were in a prime location near the start and finish line, with a wide view of pit road and the sweeping 2.66-mile tri-oval. From that elevated perch, we could see the entire frontstretch, restarts forming up, pit strategy unfolding, and those last-second moves that Talladega is famous for.
As we made our way toward the track, I walked the aisle to go over the Talladega basics one more time. As of October 2025, Talladega allowed fans to bring soft-sided coolers and backpacks into the grandstands within specific size limits, so plenty of guests came prepared with snacks and drinks to get them through the afternoon. Between that and the view, it was tough to imagine a better setup for a superspeedway Sunday.
Race Action: Drafting Packs and the Big One
When the field rolled off and the green flag waved for the 2025 Talladega YellaWood 500, the sound jumped to another level almost instantly. Packs formed quickly, sometimes three and four wide, as drivers searched for the right drafting partners. From our section, we could watch the outside line build momentum, see the middle lane shuffle cars around, and track how long the leader could hang on before getting freight-trained by the next run.
Our group was glued to the action all afternoon. Heads were constantly moving between the track, the big screen, and scanner chatter as fans followed both the race and the playoff implications at the same time. For the first-timers, every restart tightened the nerves a bit more. Ashley would lean over and say, “Okay, this is where it gets spicy,” and she was not wrong.
Eventually, Talladega did what Talladega is known for: the Big One arrived in the form of a multi-car incident that unfolded right in front of us, with smoke, sliding cars, and that unmistakable collective gasp from the grandstands. Once everything settled and drivers climbed out, conversations in our section immediately shifted to who got through clean, who was nursing damage, and who had just lucked their way back into contention.
The closing laps were chaos in the best possible way, with side drafting, bold blocks, and late moves coming off turn four. By the time the checkered flag flew, just about everyone in our section was on their feet, pointing at the scoring pylon, trading “Did you see that?!” reactions, and replaying the finish from every angle. On the ride back to Birmingham, the bus buzzed with people replaying the Big One, comparing their favorite moves of the afternoon, and already debating which track they want to visit next.
For Ashley and me, weekends like this are exactly why we love what we do. The logistics ran smoothly, the group really clicked, and the racing delivered that classic Talladega chaos you just cannot fake.
