On Sunday, April 26, we took our RaceAway group to Talladega Superspeedway for the 2026 Jack Link’s 500, and it had that unmistakable Talladega feeling from the start: big sky, big speed, and a whole lot of anticipation on the bus ride over. For fans visiting Talladega, this was the kind of weekend that reminds us why this place stays on so many bucket lists. By the time we rolled through race morning, the weather was pleasant, the energy was high, and our guests were more than ready to see how the day would shake out.
A Talladega Weekend with Familiar Faces and Faraway Travelers
One thing we loved about this weekend was how many returning guests came back with us. That always gives a trip a warm, easy feel right off the bat. Folks settle in quicker, conversations start flowing in the hotel lobby, and by the time race morning comes around, it feels less like a group of strangers and more like a bunch of racing friends headed to the same place.
This weekend also had an extra layer of fun because our group really came from all over. We hosted guests from New Zealand and from Germany, which is always special to see. Talladega has such a reputation that fans are willing to travel a long way to experience it in person, and we never take that for granted. There is just something mighty memorable about welcoming international guests to one of the biggest, fastest tracks on the schedule.
Paul R. and his son Kyle were another sweet part of the weekend story. They spent the trip with us while celebrating Kyle’s upcoming high school graduation, and you could tell that made the whole weekend mean a little more. They are big Ross Chastain fans, so Sunday gave them a chance to see one of their favorites out there in the Talladega pack, and that kind of personal connection always adds something extra to race day.
Our home base was the Embassy Suites Birmingham Hoover, and it works real well for this trip. RaceAway’s Talladega package page highlights the hotel’s spacious two-room suites and cooked-to-order breakfast, and that kind of setup helps guests feel comfortable before and after a long race day. The hotel is roughly 50 to 55 miles from the speedway, so having the motorcoach arranged takes a lot of the pressure off and lets everybody relax instead of fooling with race traffic on their own.
From Birmingham to the Big One Buildup
Race morning had a smooth start. As of our April 2026 weekend, charter transportation departed at 9:00 a.m., guests were asked to be ready 10 minutes early, and the drive from the Birmingham area to Talladega was expected to run up to about an hour and a half with traffic. The bus picked up near the hotel’s main entrance, and that simple routine helps the day get going without much fuss. Emily and Ashley were on site in Birmingham from Friday evening through Monday morning, so our guests had hosts with them all weekend long.
Talladega always has a different kind of tension to it. You feel it before the green flag even drops. The draft keeps everybody packed together, every line matters, and the whole race can swing in a heartbeat. Once our guests got inside and found their spots, they had terrific vantage points to take it all in, from the huge packs forming up to the sudden runs and near-misses that make this place so famous.
As of race day in April 2026, Talladega’s crossover gates for Garage Experience access were scheduled to open at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, the tram service or track crossover could be used to reach the infield areas, and concessions and merchandise were cashless at the speedway that weekend. Talladega also permitted soft-sided coolers up to 14” x 14” x 14” in the grandstands and one bag or backpack no larger than 18”, with coolers and bags subject to search at the gate.
The Kind of Finish Folks Talk About All the Way Home
And goodness, the race itself gave everybody plenty to talk about. Talladega did what Talladega always does: tight packs, bold moves, and that constant sense that one shove or one bad angle could turn the whole afternoon upside down. Our guests got to watch Carson Hocevar break through for his first career Cup Series win in the Jack Link’s 500, surviving the draft, the late-race chaos, and all the pressure that comes with trying to close one out at a superspeedway.
That first-win story made the whole thing even more memorable. At a place like Talladega, nothing feels settled until it is over, and you could feel that all afternoon. Every surge seemed to pull people forward in their seats just a little more. That is part of what makes this track so special to host. Even folks who have been to plenty of races know Talladega has its own heartbeat.
