Host Recap: 2025 Charlotte Coca-Cola 600 | Memorial Day with Our RaceAway Family

RaceAway guests had an unforgettable Memorial Day weekend at the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This time we traded the twists of the fall ROVAL weekend for Charlotte’s classic 1.5-mile oval and the sport’s longest race. Ross Chastain charged from the back of the field to snatch the win in the closing laps, while William Byron dominated the early going, sweeping the first three stages and leading 283 laps before Chastain’s late rally. Great racing, wide-open views of the track, and a fantastic group of fans made this Coca-Cola 600 one we won’t forget anytime soon.

Memorial Day Traditions and Familiar Faces

I’m Jennifer, a Kansan who found her way to North Carolina years ago, and Charlotte has become one of my favorite “home” weekends to host. Our group stayed at the Embassy Suites Hotel Charlotte on South Tryon, a convenient hub that makes it easy for everyone to settle in before race day.

More than half of our guests had traveled with RaceAway before, so the vibe in the lobby was more “catching up with friends” than “meeting strangers.” It’s always a special treat to see Donna E.; since 2015, she’s brought her son and his friend along for 13 race trips! Watching those boys grow from little kids clutching die-cast cars to young men debating strategy and playoff implications has been one of the sweetest storylines of my years with RaceAway.

At the same time, I loved meeting first-time guests and hearing which drivers they were pulling for. Memorial Day weekend at Charlotte is the kind of event that tends to hook people for life, and it’s fun to watch newcomers experience that for the first time.

From Embassy Suites to 600 Miles Under the Lights

On Sunday afternoon, I met everyone in the lobby to double-check tickets and answer any questions. Our private motorcoach was scheduled to leave at 1:00 PM, giving us plenty of time to cover the 25 miles to the track and account for race-day traffic. I asked guests to be ready a little early so loading the bus would be relaxed, not rushed.

Once we were rolling toward Charlotte Motor Speedway, I went over the essentials (current as of May 2025): soft-sided coolers no larger than 14 inches, no glass, one additional bag or backpack per person, and cashless concessions and merchandise once we reached the track. We covered the schedule: gates open and pre-race infield access begins at 2:30 PM; opening ceremonies are at 3:30 PM; and the green flag drops at 6:00 PM for the Coca-Cola 600!

Somewhere along I-85, I grabbed the mic to give a big birthday shout-out to Nelson S. The whole bus jumped in for an impromptu round of “Happy Birthday,” and you could tell it set the tone for a fun night. By the time we pulled into the bus lot, folks were laughing, trading driver predictions, and already talking about making this their new Memorial Day tradition.

Once parked, guests headed toward the grandstands or into the infield for pre-race access, depending on their chosen ticket option. The military tributes, flyover, and patriotic pre-race moments always hit a little deeper on this weekend, and our group took it all in before settling into their seats for 600 miles of action.

Chastain’s Comeback in a Classic Coca-Cola 600

From the drop of the green, it looked like William Byron might turn the Coca-Cola 600 into his personal showcase. From our seats, we watched him control the pace, win the first three stages, and lead lap after lap. Every time the field thundered past the start/finish line, Byron was out front, and more than a few guests started wondering if anyone could touch the No. 24 car.

But Charlotte’s 600 miles have a way of rewriting the script. As the race wore on and strategies shifted, Ross Chastain began his march from the back. Over the final stretch, we could feel our section get more animated every time he picked off another spot. When it became clear he had a legitimate shot at the win, fans around us were on their feet, pointing and talking through how he’d gotten there.

In the closing laps, Chastain completed the comeback, slipping past Byron and holding on to take the victory. It was the kind of finish that leaves everyone buzzing – some thrilled their driver came out on top, others amazed at how quickly the dominant car lost control of the storyline. As the checkered flag waved and the fireworks lit the sky, it felt like a perfect cap to a long, dramatic evening of racing.

On the walk back to the motorcoach, conversation was all about how strong Byron had been early and how wild it was to see Chastain steal the show. Once everyone was aboard, we headed back toward the Embassy Suites, tired but in that good “we just saw something special” way.

Guests’ Reflections on the Weekend

One of the best parts of hosting is hearing how the trip landed for our guests. After Charlotte, Elizabeth V. sent a note that really made me smile:

“Another race week has come and gone – doesn’t seem possible. I just wanted to tell you once more how much we enjoyed going to Charlotte with you. You really made the trip great fun. It was one of those rare vacations where everything went the way it was planned. Thanks again for a wonderful time. We hope to see you again soon.”

Comments like that capture exactly what we aim for at RaceAway: clear plans, thoughtful hosting, and space for guests to focus on the race and the people they’re sharing it with.

Wrapping Up a Special Memorial Day in Charlotte

By the end of the night, our group had shared a little bit of everything: big-race atmosphere, dramatic on-track action, and those small moments on the bus and in the stands that turn strangers into friends. For me, as a long-time RaceAway host and a proud North Carolinian, weekends like this are why I love what I do.

If you’re thinking about joining us for a future Coca-Cola 600 or exploring other Charlotte Motor Speedway NASCAR packages, I’d be happy to welcome you along. We’ll handle the details so you can take in the racing, the memories, and the people you share them with.
